Ouray Colorado Weather: What to Expect Every Season

Ouray's box canyon location creates its own microclimate. Afternoons can be 30°F cooler than mornings — and summer thunderstorms arrive like clockwork.

At a Glance

  • Summer High: 72–78°F
  • Summer Low: 45–50°F
  • Winter High: 35–45°F
  • Annual Snowfall: ~100 inches
  • Thunderstorm Season: July–August

Summer Weather: Warm Days, Cool Nights, Afternoon Storms

June through August is Ouray's peak season. Daytime highs reach the low-to-mid 70s°F, with brilliant sunshine and low humidity. Mornings are ideal for hiking above treeline — start early, because afternoon thunderstorms build over the San Juans with remarkable regularity, typically arriving between 1–3 pm.

Nights drop to the mid-40s even in July. A light jacket or fleece is non-negotiable for evening walks along Main Street or post-soak cooldowns at the hot springs. The canyon walls hold some warmth, but once the sun drops behind the ridgeline, temperatures fall quickly.

Fall: The Best Weather in the San Juans

September and October bring Ouray's most stable, pleasant weather. Highs stay in the 55–65°F range, humidity drops further, and afternoon storm frequency decreases dramatically. The aspens turn brilliant gold throughout the San Juans in late September — it's arguably the most beautiful time of year to visit.

Shoulder-season crowds are noticeably smaller than summer. Trails are less congested, restaurants have more availability, and accommodation rates ease. Early October can still feel like summer during the day, but nights begin dipping into the 30s. Pack a real warm layer and expect the possibility of a light snow dusting at higher elevations.

Winter: Ice Climbing Capital of the World

Ouray's winters are cold but not extreme by Colorado standards. The town averages 100 inches of annual snowfall but sits at a lower elevation than many Colorado ski towns, so deep mid-winter freezes are less common. Daytime highs typically range from 35–45°F in December through February, with overnight lows in the teens.

The Ouray Ice Park — the world's first artificially irrigated public ice climbing park — fills the Uncompahgre Gorge with hundreds of ice routes from late December through February. Even non-climbers come to watch. The hot springs are at their most atmospheric in winter, with steam rising from the pool against snow-dusted canyon walls.

Spring: Mud Season and Wildflower Previews

March through May is Ouray's quietest season. Snow lingers on mountain passes well into May, closing most 4WD roads until June. Trails at lower elevations are muddy and occasionally icy through April. Expect variable conditions — a warm 60°F day can be followed by a surprise spring snowstorm.

Late May and early June mark the transition to summer conditions, with wildflowers beginning to emerge at lower elevations. It's a lovely time to visit if you don't mind unpredictable weather and don't need 4WD road access.
