Handies Peak and the Basin Below
American Basin sits in a broad glacial cirque near Lake City, at the base of Handies Peak — one of Colorado's most accessible fourteeners (Class 2, well-marked trail). The basin itself is a wildflower destination in its own right: mid-July brings columbines, paintbrush, and dozens of other species covering the tundra in colors comparable to Yankee Boy Basin near Ouray.
The combination of an achievable fourteener summit and a stunning base camp makes American Basin one of the most complete alpine day destinations in the San Juans. Those not attempting the summit can spend several hours in the basin itself — hiking the perimeter trail, photographing the flowers, and watching the peaks above.
Day Trip from Ouray
Reaching American Basin from Ouray requires crossing Engineer or Cinnamon Pass via the Alpine Loop, making it a 90-minute drive in favorable conditions. It's best combined with a full Alpine Loop day — crossing Engineer Pass in the morning, visiting American Basin and Lake City at midday, and returning via a different route. The logistics require some planning but the payoff — covering some of the most spectacular terrain in the San Juans in a single day — is worth it.
