Ouray's Most Dramatic Natural Feature
Box Canyon Falls is a 285-foot waterfall that drops through a canyon so narrow in places that the walls close within feet of each other and block out the sky. The Canyon Creek forces itself through this crack in the rock and creates a constant roar and mist that you feel physically before you see the falls. A system of boardwalks and platforms — maintained as a city park — brings visitors within striking distance of the water without any technical hiking required.
The setting is genuinely dramatic: the canyon walls are 400 feet high, covered in ferns and moss fed by the perpetual mist, and the sound inside the canyon proper is disorienting in scale. In spring and early summer, when snowmelt has the creek at maximum volume, Box Canyon Falls is one of the most powerful natural experiences in Colorado.
Planning Your Visit
Box Canyon Falls is a 15-minute walk south from The Lumberyard along 4th Avenue. Admission is charged at the park entrance. The main viewing platforms are accessible to all mobility levels; additional trail sections above the falls require more effort and involve stairs. The upper trail connects to the Portland Trail system for those wanting a longer hike.
Visit early or late in the day to avoid the mid-morning crowds that form in July and August. The light inside the narrow canyon section is best on overcast days when there's no harsh shadow. In winter, when the walls can develop ice formations, the canyon has a completely different and equally dramatic character.
