Colorado's Most Photographed Mountain View
The Dallas Divide on Colorado Highway 62 between Ridgway and Placerville is one of the most famous photographic vantage points in the state. From the divide, the full arc of the Sneffels Range — with Mt. Sneffels (14,158 ft) at center — appears in an unobstructed panorama across a valley of ranch land. In September, the aspen groves between the viewpoint and the peaks turn gold, creating the classic image that appears on countless Colorado travel publications.
The Dallas Trail begins near the divide and climbs through forest and open meadows to higher viewpoints with even more expansive perspectives of the range. The trail is moderately difficult and offers a 3–4 hour hiking option from the trailhead.
From Ouray
The Dallas Divide is 20 miles from The Lumberyard — a 30-minute drive north on US 550 to Ridgway, then west on Highway 62. It's an ideal half-morning excursion before returning to Ouray for lunch, or a starting point for a full-day exploration of the northern San Juan approach. Combine with Ridgway State Park for a varied day on the calmer north side of the range.
