The Beautiful One
Handies Peak is consistently cited among the most rewarding fourteener experiences in Colorado — a combination of accessible terrain (Class 2 throughout, well-marked trail), the extraordinary wildflower setting of American Basin at its base, and summit views extending across the San Juan plateau in all directions. It's a peak that delivers completely.
The summit panorama includes multiple mountain ranges: the San Juans in every direction, with Mt. Sneffels, Uncompahgre, and Wetterhorn all visible on a clear day. The 360-degree view at 14,048 feet is one of the finest available in the southern Rockies.
The Alpine Loop Approach
Reaching Handies Peak from Ouray requires crossing Engineer or Cinnamon Pass via the Alpine Loop, then continuing to the American Basin trailhead near Lake City. The total drive is 90 minutes from The Lumberyard — requiring a 5am departure to reach the trailhead at 6:30am and summit safely before afternoon thunderstorms develop. The full day — drive, hike, summit, return — covers some of the finest terrain in the San Juans.
