The Flat Place in the High Canyon

Ironton Park is an unusual geographical feature in the otherwise canyon-dominated terrain south of Ouray — a relatively flat mountain valley at 9,800 feet where the upper Uncompahgre drainage widens before the canyon walls of Red Mountain Pass begin. The park was the site of the Ironton townsite during the mining era and retains several foundation ruins accessible by a short walk from the highway.

The Red Mountains loom immediately to the south and east, their distinctive ochre coloring creating a dramatic backdrop for the flat meadow. The light on the red peaks at sunset, seen from Ironton Park, is photographic gold.

Easy Stop on the Million Dollar Highway

Ironton Park is accessible directly from a pullout on US 550 — no 4WD required. It's a natural stop on a drive between Ouray and Silverton, adding 20–30 minutes for a walk through the meadow and ruins without any significant effort. From The Lumberyard, it's 15 minutes south on US 550.
