Ouray's Most Accessible Waterfall
Lower Cascade Falls begins at a trailhead on the east side of Ouray and follows a canyon drainage to a dramatic waterfall in less than half a mile. The trail is rocky but straightforward — suitable for families with young children, older travelers, and anyone who wants a payoff without a significant commitment. The falls itself drops through a narrow cliff-walled canyon, creating a roaring curtain of water during peak snowmelt in May and June.
The sound of the falls carries up the canyon on the approach, building anticipation as the trail climbs. The viewpoint at the base of the falls is dramatic — the water drops through a gap in the cliff face and continues down the canyon below. Even in summer, when flow is reduced from the peak snowmelt volume, it's an impressive destination.
Easy Access from The Lumberyard
The Lower Cascade Falls trailhead is approximately a 15-minute walk from The Lumberyard on the east side of Ouray. You can be standing at the waterfall in under 45 minutes from the condo. It's the ideal quick morning activity before a drive day, a late-afternoon walk before dinner, or the right-sized hike for members of a group who want fresh air without a full mountain commitment.
Dogs are welcome on leash. The trail is best in spring and early summer when flow is at maximum, but it runs year-round and is one of the few Ouray outdoor destinations that's accessible even in winter for those comfortable on snowy trails.
