Easy Day Hikes from Ouray
Lower Cascade Falls (0.5 miles one way, easy) is the most accessible trail in the Ouray area — a short walk to a dramatic waterfall, suitable for any fitness level. The Uncompahgre River path along the north edge of town is flat, paved in sections, and dog-friendly. Box Canyon Falls involves minimal walking on boardwalk to one of Colorado's most dramatic waterfall settings.
These easy options are ideal for the first day of an Ouray trip, for family members with varying fitness levels, or for recovery days between more demanding outings.
Moderate Day Hikes
The Ouray Perimeter Trail (6 miles, 1,400 ft gain) is the best moderate hike accessible directly from town — a complete loop with views in all directions and enough elevation to feel like a real mountain day. Portland Trail and Twin Falls Trail offer quieter alternatives with waterfall destinations and canyon views.
Blue Lakes Trail (8 miles, 2,000 ft gain) is the best moderate-to-strenuous day hike from the broader Ouray area — three alpine lakes in the Mt. Sneffels Wilderness that are among the most beautiful destinations in the San Juans.
Summit Objectives
Ouray provides excellent access to multiple Colorado fourteeners. Mt. Sneffels (14,158 ft) via Yankee Boy Basin is the closest and most popular, with a Class 3 upper mountain. Uncompahgre Peak (14,309 ft) and Handies Peak (14,048 ft) are accessible via the Alpine Loop corridor. Wetterhorn Peak (14,015 ft) is reached from the Gunnison side in a longer day.
All summit attempts should begin early — before 6am from the trailhead — to be descending before typical 12–1pm thunderstorm development. The San Juans have more lightning fatalities than any other Colorado range; respect the afternoon weather window.
