The Hard Line in the San Juans

Poughkeepsie Gulch is the route that separates capable off-road vehicles from purpose-built ones. The terrain includes ledge climbs, loose shale sections, and narrow shelf roads with significant exposure — conditions that regularly result in vehicle recovery situations for those who underestimate the rating. It's not a route for stock vehicles or inexperienced drivers, regardless of enthusiasm.

For those with the right vehicle and skills, Poughkeepsie Gulch connects to the upper Engineer Pass corridor through dramatic terrain that sees far fewer visitors than the main routes. The remoteness and technical character are the appeal.

From Ouray

The Poughkeepsie Gulch trailhead is reached via the Engineer Pass road from Ouray. It's part of a network of technical routes in the upper Mineral Creek drainage that experienced off-roaders often string together for a challenging multi-route day. From The Lumberyard, the approach takes about 45 minutes to reach the Poughkeepsie junction.
