The Gentle Giant of the San Juans
Uncompahgre Peak is distinctive among Colorado fourteeners for its combination of impressive stature and relatively accessible route. At 14,309 feet — the sixth highest summit in Colorado — it presents a imposing rectangular block visible from dozens of miles away across the San Juan plateau. Yet the standard route from the southwest is Class 2: a sustained hike without technical climbing, making it one of the more achievable high-altitude objectives in the range.
The peak is named for the Uncompahgre band of the Ute people, who occupied this region for centuries before Colorado's mining era. The name means 'warm water spring' or 'red water spring' in Ute — a reference to the hot springs that would later define the town of Ouray below.
Logistics from Ouray
The Uncompahgre Peak trailhead is accessed via Lake City, approximately 75 minutes from Ouray via the Alpine Loop road or longer via US 50. The drive through the Alpine Loop — crossing Engineer or Cinnamon Pass — adds scenic value to the approach. Many Ouray visitors combine the Uncompahgre Peak summit with a full Alpine Loop drive as a 12-hour day that covers some of the finest terrain in the San Juans.
Leave The Lumberyard by 5am to reach the trailhead by 6:30am and summit by 9–10am, well ahead of typical afternoon thunderstorm development. The Uncompahgre summit is wide and open — fully exposed to lightning. Clear and early is the only way to do this peak safely.
