Above the Town

The Weehawken Trail climbs the eastern canyon wall above Ouray on a series of switchbacks, gaining significant elevation quickly and delivering aerial views of the town, the river corridor, and the surrounding mountains. The perspective from the upper trail puts Ouray's geographic situation into full context — the town compressed into its bowl, the canyon walls rising on all sides, the valley opening to the north toward Ridgway.

The trail connects to additional routes on the bench above the canyon rim, allowing extension into longer hikes for those wanting more distance. The immediate viewpoints above town are accessible within 45 minutes of starting.

Access from The Lumberyard

The Weehawken trailhead is on the east side of Ouray — approximately 15 minutes on foot from The Lumberyard. It's a natural early-morning or late-afternoon activity when the light on the canyon walls is best. The trail connects to portions of the Perimeter Trail system for those wanting a longer loop.
