The Story Behind the Name
Ouray sits inside a natural amphitheater — a circular bowl of canyon walls and mountain faces that catches and amplifies sound, light, and weather in ways that feel almost theatrical. The Amphitheater condo on the second floor of The Lumberyard faces directly into this formation, with a private deck that puts you at eye level with the canyon rim.
On July 4th, this is the most coveted deck in Ouray. The fireworks are launched from the canyon walls and explode at eye level with the audience below. From The Amphitheater's deck, you're not watching the show from below — you're watching it straight across.
The Deck and Mountain Range Views
The deck is the heart of the Amphitheater experience. Mountain range views in multiple directions, positioned above the treeline in the immediate vicinity, with enough space for chairs and a table. The deck sees sunrise earlier than the ground floor units — the canyon walls catch the first light and reflect it into the valley while the town below is still in shadow.
Guests who have stayed in the Amphitheater frequently book the same condo for return trips specifically for the deck. Several have described it as the best vacation deck they've experienced anywhere.
Inside the Amphitheater
The condo has a primary queen bedroom plus a large couch arrangement that comfortably sleeps a fifth guest. One full bathroom serves the unit. The living area is open and well-lit, with large windows framing the canyon view. The full kitchen has everything needed for cooking complete meals — the same level of equipment as the other Lumberyard units.
The Amphitheater has a distinct design character: warm tones, mountain-inspired details, and an orientation that keeps the view front and center throughout the interior. The windows on the deck side frame the canyon in a way that makes the outside feel like a living painting.
Perfect for Couples and Small Families
At up to five guests, the Amphitheater is ideal for a couple, a couple with one or two children, or a small group of friends. It's the most popular unit for anniversary weekends and romantic getaways, largely because the combination of the deck view and the intimate scale creates an atmosphere that larger units with more bedrooms can't quite replicate.
For July 4th weekend, the Amphitheater books out faster than any other unit. If this date matters to you, secure it as early as possible.
